Project Title: Perceptual Processes in Self-Regulation

Project Description:

This research project seeks to advance social psychological goal theory. In the perception literature, several cognitive dynamics influence perceptual processes, such as representational momentum, the flash-lag effect, and boundary extension. Aim 1 is to investigate these perceptual processes in concert with typical goal paradigms to understand the degree to which vision science can offer insights into aspects of individual goal pursuit, such as planning, coasting, and disengagement. Multiple methodologies will be available to investigate these questions, including Dikablis wireless eye-tracking glasses and a Microsoft Surface Touchtable. Aim 2 is to develop or strengthen strategies to circumvent self-regulatory failures on the basis of findings from Aim 1.

The pursuit of unifying theories is a cornerstone of scientific practice and is the ethos of the SUMAC laboratory which is part of the Perception, Cognition, and Neuroscience group in the Department of Psychology and Computer Science. The PhD research programme will be based at UCLan campus, Preston.
