PhD Studentships

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Location: York, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Sep 2022

The Department of Sociology at the University of York has funding available to support two full-time PhD studentships. Successful applicants will receive a stipend in line with UKRI rates and a fee waiver at home student rates for a period of three years. International applicants are welcome to apply but please note that we are unable to waive the full international fee.

Since its establishment in 1963, the Department has risen to become one of the top-rated UK sociology departments for research (coming first overall in both REF 2014 and RAE 2008, and first for research impact in REF 2021). We are in the World Top 100 for Sociology (QS World Rankings by Subject 2022). We produce world-leading, transformative research that makes a difference within and beyond the academy. Our postgraduate researchers take the skills, experiences and unique insights gained at York Sociology to forge successful careers all over the world.

We invite the submission of PhD proposals that align with one of our four research clusters: Culture, Values and Practices; Gender, Sexualities and Inequalities; Language and Social Interaction; and Science, Health and Technology. Click on the following link for more information about the research clusters . The following link will provide more on the specific research interests of members of the Department . Please specify on the application that you are applying to the Sociology Departmental Scholarship awards. To do this, please select ‘Other’ in the ‘How studies will be funded’ section and then write ‘Department of Sociology scholarship’.

Applications should be made through the normal University of York postgraduate research applications website . The closing date for applications is 16th September 2022. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in October and successful candidates notified by end of November. The scholarship will begin on 9th January, 2023.

If you already have the offer of a PhD place for Sociology at York for October 2022 but have been unable to secure funding, you will automatically be considered for an award and so you do not need to apply again. However, you should consider deferring entry to January 2023 because it would be a risk to begin a programme without knowing the outcome of these funding decisions. If you would like to defer your offer please email us ([email protected] ) and we can arrange this for you. If you do not  want to be considered for the scholarship, please let us know.
