PhD Studentships - Process Industries: Net Zero
Award Summary
These studentships provide 100% fees (Home & international), a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £18,622 (2023/24 UKRI rate), and a research training support grant of £20,000.
Overview
All projects will be based within the CDT in Process Industries: Net Zero .
These PhD projects will train the next generation of process and chemical engineers, and chemists, to develop the new processes, process technologies and green chemistries required for the process industries’ transition to Net Zero. We expect our graduates to become the architects of the UK process industries’ transition to Net Zero.
12 PhD projects will be advertised between March and May 2024 in the area of “Process Industries: Net Zero”. There will be a broad range of projects, all co-created with and co-supervised by industry, centred around:
(i) new feedstocks for the process industries, mainly CO2 and biomass
(ii) new technologies for the move to new energy vectors (renewable electricity and hydrogen)
(iii) data processing to underpin the transition to Net Zero (e.g., AI, digital twins etc)
Each project will be co-supervised with one of our 25 industrial partners. Project co-creation with our industrial partners will guarantee the industrial relevance and impact of the research. Some projects will also be in collaboration with our partners at the Green Chemistry Centre of excellence at the University of York.
You will also be taught a range of skills to complement, drive and strengthen your research: life-cycle analysis, techno-economic analysis, digital and business skills, ethics etc. You will also undertake short courses in the core subjects of these PhDs: process intensification and green chemistry.
