PhD Studentship: Synthesis and study of organic cage enzyme mimics PhD Position

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Durham, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 29 Feb 2024

Description

A fully funded PhD studentship is available to start in October 2024 within the new research group of Dr Keith Andrews (https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/keith-g-andrews/ ) at Durham University.

Organic chemists have been inspired by enzymes since their discovery a century ago. This has led to countless breakthroughs, including in organocatalysis, supramolecular sensing, computational modelling, crystallography, and theories of non-bonding interactions and transition states. However, chemists are still unable to fully explain or replicate the power of enzymes.

The Andrews group is developing robust organic cage-shaped molecules with tuneable active site interiors in the hope of mimicking enzymes. We use modern self-assembly approaches to quickly generate families of complex cavities. We then tune these cavities towards goals in sustainable catalysis, healthcare sensors, and models for studying enzyme function and mechanism.

The focus of this PhD project is to design and synthesise new organic cage molecules by developing state-of-the-art synthesis techniques to access functionalised and desymmetrised cavities resembling enzyme active sites. The student will then study the functionality of the cages. Available projects include using the cages to degrade and recycle polymers, to achieve enantio-/regio- selective transformations of biomolecules or feedstock chemicals, or as molecular receptors for detecting the presence of biomarkers: the specifics will depend on the aspirations of the individual. Dr Andrews can be contacted to discuss ideas.

The applicant (home fees only) will have strong organic synthesis and analytical skills/interests, and will be trained in supramolecular synthesis and modelling, methodology development, kinetic/host-guest measurements, and the study of organic and enzyme mechanism.

Applicants should be about to graduate with a first or strong 2.1 degree in Chemistry or Natural Sciences (or have synthetic chemistry experience).

Awards: 1 award

Award information: Fully funded PhD studentship for 3.5 years to start October 2024 (flexible) for UK students only. Students will get the typical EPSRC stipend.

Closing date: February 29th 2024
