Applications are invited for fully funded PhD within the Faculty of Engineering in the Nottingham Geospatial Institute (NGI) Research Group (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ngi/ )at the University of Nottingham. 

We are looking for enthusiastic and driven Ph.D. candidates interested in space systems engineering. Our expansive research areas encompass a variety of innovative fields, including but not limited to miniaturized satellite technologies, data-driven astrodynamics, space mission design and optimal control, solar sails technologies, development of micro-thrusters for CubeSats, advanced satellite attitude control, image-based orbital determination, inter-satellite communication, and space robotics. Our projects are integral in advancing space situational awareness, combating climate change, developing lunar communication systems, and facilitating frequent deep-space exploration with nanosatellites. This exceptional opportunity allows you to work and learn alongside esteemed academic experts and collaborate with leading international space agencies within a vibrant and forward-thinking research environment.

Your Profile:

  • UK or International 
  • Passionate about space exploration and innovative technologies.
  • Hold a first or upper-second-class honors degree (or international equivalent) in a related field (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Electronics Communication, any relevant Engineering field, Physics, Mathematics, Computer science) or an MRes/MSc in a relevant field (similar fields to those listed above).
  • Strong analytical skills with a keen interest in either satellite systems or machine learning in space research.
  • Essential Skills: Code programming (MATLAB, C/C++, Python, and/or similar)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively in an international and interdisciplinary team.
  • Funding Support

    The studentships are fully funded (tuition fee + stipend) for 3 or 3.5 years (depending on the topic).

    Start date: October 2024.
