PhD Studentship: Retrofitting of Substandard Reinforced Concrete Members with Innovative Materials

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Nottingham, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 08 May 2023

Location: UK Other

Project Description:

Most of the existing infrastructure and building stock was designed according to old standards using poor material and construction practices. The vulnerability of these structures to natural and man-made hazards is increased further considering the level of deterioration of the structural elements due to ageing and aggressive environmental conditions. Recent events worldwide have illustrated forcefully the catastrophic implications of degradation to civil engineering structures. There is no doubt that there is a global need for sustainable and resilient buildings and infrastructure due to climate change and increased societal exposure to natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. Retrofitting for enhancing the performance and extending the service-life of deteriorated and deficient structures with quantified sustainability is the only viable solution. This project aims to investigate the efficiency of various innovative retrofitting solutions in alleviating the deficiencies of old substandard reinforced concrete members. Both analytical and experimental investigation will be carried out.
