About the Project
Applications are invited for a PhD project funded via the National Institute for Health and Care Research Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Nottingham NRC). The PhD studentship will be available from 1st July 2024 for a period of 3 years.
PROJECT
Chronic liver disease (CLD) is the only major comorbidity with high premature mortality. It leads to liver failure ad liver cancer development; however, prognostication and disease stratification has been unsuccessful so far.
Our study hypothesis, based on our previous research, is that complications and mortality related to CLD could be prognosticated using the direct and indirect serum biomarkers of hepatocyte senescence.
The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary research environment and learn a variety of clinical and basic science laboratory techniques, working as part of our liver and gastroenterology research team. This study will involve close interaction with patients with CLD, and therefore prior experience in patient-related clinical research and GCP certification would be mandatory.
ENVIRONMENT
The student will be based at the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (NDDC), within the academic unit of Translational Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham. The NDDC (https://nddcbru.org.uk ) is based in the School of Medicine and is one of the largest gastrointestinal (GI) and liver academic units in the country and provides a wide range of research opportunities. It hosts the GI and Liver Disorders theme of National Institute for Health and Care Research funded Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Nottingham BRC).
The PhD will be supervised by Dr Aravinthan (Associate Professor of Hepatology – Principle Supervisor).
TO APPLY
Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a first or upper second class UK undergraduate degree (or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK) in a relevant scientific subject. Completion/near completion of master’s degree with distinction is desirable. This project requires a highly motivated and driven candidate with previous experience in patient-related clinical research. The studentship is available from 1st July 2024 for a period of 3 years and is full time only due to funding constraints.
The studentship is fully funded (fees and maintenance) and is only available to graduates who are eligible for UK/Home PhD fee status. Due to funding restrictions, international students cannot be considered.
Informal enquiries should be directed to [email protected]
Closing date for applications: Wednesday 31st January 2024 at 5.00 pm UK time.
