The Centre for Health Economics, University of York are looking for exceptional UK or International students to apply for two PhD in Health Economics opportunities associated with the ESHCRU Policy Research Unit to start in the academic year 2024/25.
ESHCRU applies expertise in economic theory, econometrics and policy evaluation to tackle current and long-standing challenges in the NHS and social care sectors. These include supporting recovery from Covid-19, managing demand and unmet need and incentivising integration. We also investigate inequalities in access, outcomes and service delivery. The studentships will complement the wider ESHCRU research programme.
We are offering up to two studentships from the following three topic areas:
Topic 1: The impact of care continuity and fragmentation in the UK NHS on patient outcomes. Empirical analyses using administrative data.
Supervisors: James Gaughan and Nigel Rice
Topic 2: The effect of demand and supply-side factors on hospital emergency department performance in the UK NHS: evidence using econometric and machine-learning methods.
Supervisors: Peter Sivey , Rita Santos , Martin Chalkley
Topic 3: Quality-efficiency trade-offs: does reducing hospital length of stay reduce quality of care?
Supervisor: Luigi Siciliani
Supervision and research environment
Successful candidates will be supervised in CHE and will be registered through the PhD in Health Economics at the Department of Economics and Related Studies at the University of York. This is an opportunity to work with researchers in one of the most successful health economics research groups in the UK. The award
The award will cover academic fees for the 2024/25 entry, at UK or international rates asappropriate, plus a maintenance stipend for 3 years at UKRI rates (£18,622 in 2023/24).
Eligibility criteria
Applicants to the PhD in Health Economics are usually required to hold a Bachelors degree in Economics with a 2:1 or 1st class honours (or overseas equivalent), and an MSc in Health Economics, Economics, or a closely related discipline, with a high average mark (60% or above, including at least 60% in the dissertation component). The English language requirement is IELTS: 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each component.

In addition, you should upload the following documents.
- Personal Statement, on why you are interested in this PhD studentship and what makes you a good candidate (500 words maximum),
- Outline Proposal, describing your research questions and intended approach to one of the three topic areas, noting the kinds of methods and data that could be used (1000 words maximum).
- An example of your written work for example a lead-authored research article, masters dissertation, or other unpublished project report.
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae.
- Academic Transcripts (and official English translations if the original documents are not in English)
- Certificates (and official English translations if the original documents are not in English).
- You will need to provide two references. You only need to supply the details of your reference at the point you submit your application. Your referees will be contacted automatically by email and asked to provide a reference for you

Interviews
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed Face to face or via Zoom.
The interviews will take place during week commencing 15th April 2024 but the exact date is to be confirmed.
At interview, candidates will give a short presentation on their proposed project including relevant literature, potential data sources and methods.
