PhD Studentship: Novel Applications of Remote Sensing for Health

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Southampton, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Aug 2024

PhD Supervisor: Adriana Wilde

Supervisory Team: Dr Adriana Wilde

Project description

Experience with us the cutting edge of unobtrusive remote sensing and its integration into our daily lives. Remote sensing (such as in camera-based systems) is increasingly being applied in the context of smart homes and health monitoring.  In these areas there are many challenges to be addressed, such as in privacy-aware diagnostics and in their deployment within realistic environments such as home settings. In these environments, accuracy is greatly affected by issues such as varying lighting conditions, multiple users, diverse pigmentation levels, and the presence of facial hair or makeup. Advances in overcoming these challenges are expected to mark a substantial difference on home-based health management. Whether you are passionate about these specific interdisciplinary research challenges or have your own exciting ideas within this space, we would like to hear from you!

If you would like to further develop your expertise in signal processing, machine learning, or computer vision applied to healthcare, and aspire to embed security by design in non-intrusive solutions, we can support you in your journey.  What we offer you:

  • Opportunities to forge connections with fellow PhD researchers within the fast-growing Digital Health and Biomedical Engineering Research Group research group and across the school. Enjoy access to state-of-the-art research facilities and collaborations within a top school in Electronics and Computer Science , with research that is recognised to be 100% world leading or internationally excellent (as per the latest Research Excellence Framework), supporting you to contribute significantly to a vibrant and collaborative research community.
  • Access to our strong industry connections and partnerships with the University Hospital Southampton to further enhance this collaborative environment.
  • Support for purchasing equipment and attending events to disseminate your research findings, both internally (in our research group and across the university) and externally, to national and international conferences and journals.
  • Mentorship by leading experts in the field, fostering your professional development.
