Studentship Description

This studentship is offered as part of the UCL-Nikon innovation partnership aimed at the development of innovative imaging techniques for applications in multiple fields from medicine to materials science. This specific studentship is aimed at combining novel imagery with advanced materials. The appointed student will work at the cutting-edge of imaging methods and materials development and spend time in industry, developing translational and interdisciplinary skills which will make him/her highly employable both by Academia and Industry.

One key technique that will be developed is phase-based x-ray imaging, which has a proven potential to detect damage and defects in materials undetectable by any other means. This will be combined with guided ultrasound for the efficient monitoring/imaging of e.g. large composite structures; their combination with finite element simulations will allow predicting defect propagation. The knowledge developed during this PhD lends itself to translation/application into other fields – notably medicine.

The involved academic groups have internationally leading profiles and an exceptional publication record. This project will provide opportunities for high-profile publications and conference presentations, and provide a wide range of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. As well as being exposed to cutting-edge imaging techniques, the student would gain significant experience with the latest developments in composite materials and other advanced materials such as Al/Ti based structures and laser-sintered materials for use in aeronautics, aerospace and beyond.

Person Specification

Funding will be for 3.5 years, with a tax free stipend of £18,000 per year plus UK/EU-level university fees. Applicants must be UK students or EU students who will have spent the previous 3 years in the UK. Outstanding students from outside the EU may apply if they have funding to support international fees. The closing date is 1st Sept 2017 and the anticipated start date is late September 2017.

Applicants must have or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 honours degree or the international equivalent in the appropriate area of physical science, as well as: experimental, mathematical and numerical skills. Creative and critical thinking. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Self-management and good working habits. Capability to work independently and programming skills.
