Project outline

As a PhD researcher specializing in Intelligent Cognitive Technologies for dynamic and flexible communication networks, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the state-of-the-art in communication technologies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and contribute to the design, simulation, and implementation of intelligent cognitive technologies for various applications of 6G/B6G and its application. In this research, you are expected to develop the intelligent communication algorithms with adaptive capabilities, incorporating machine learning for dynamic communication environments for 6G/B6G. In addition, you will apply these innovations to program hardware, capitalizing on the experimental resources available in the Cognitive Networks Lab.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to identify current trends and challenges in intelligent cognitive technologies in mobile communication.
  • Design, simulate, and optimize the intelligent decision-making algorithms capable of adapting to dynamic environments.
  • Explore innovative machine learning techniques and integrate multiple methods to manage the dynamic and flexible systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, researchers, and industry partners, to validate the designed algorithms using simulation tools and experimental setups.
  • Publish research findings in reputable journals and present results at conferences, contributing to the academic and scientific community.

Entry requirements

Essential

  • A first-class UK honours degree or equivalent in any electrical engineering-related discipline.
  • Proficient knowledge of communication systems and strong optimization skills.
  • Hands-on experience in simulating and designing communication algorithms.
  • Proficiency in programming skills such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, etc.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, managing time independently to meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Solid IT literacy.
  • Applicants must be self-motivated.
  • International/EU applicants: must meet the minimum English language requirements, which include an IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • A relevant master’s degree will be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Publications in high-impact international journals and conferences
  • Experience with communication simulation tools (e.g., NS-3).
  • Expertise in optimization algorithms with a strong mathematical background.
  • Proficient knowledge of hardware implementation skills.

Funding information

The award includes cover for UK home or international tuition fees and a stipend at standard UKRI rates. For 2023-2024 this is set at £18,622. The stipends usually increase annually in line with inflation. Applicants from outside the UK or EU are eligible.
