The School of Psychology and Computer Science invites applications for a PhD (via MPhil) studentship in the Centre for Translational Biosciences and Behaviour. The studentship will provide an annual stipend of £16,062 as well as tuition fees at the UK rate (currently £4,600 per annum). International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference in tuition fees (current rates for EU/international are £14500 per annum). It is expected the successful applicant will commence in September 2022.
The School of Psychology and Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Science & Technology and is located in the purpose-built Darwin Building. The School is well resourced, with an extensive range of state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, including an established Co-Registration Laboratory for eye movement and EEG recording and a Cognitive Ergonomics/Human Factors Laboratory. The School has a thriving community of PhD and MSc students and has particularly strong links with regional universities, law enforcement agencies, schools, community groups and NGOs.
Essential criteria for the post include having a BSc in Psychology or a related discipline, the possession of strong analytical skills, as evidenced by experience of a range of quantitative research methods, an excellent understanding of a range of statistical methods, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Applicants need to meet all essential criteria on the person specification to be considered for interview.
In addition to the application form, applicants are asked to submit a 500-word statement that: (i) outlines why organisational cybersecurity is an important area of academic study; (ii) specifies key theoretical issues that are relevant to the investigation of organisational cybersecurity; and (iii) details areas of potential practical impact for the research (e.g., in relation to company policies or practices).

Project Title: Mitigating User Vulnerabilities to Promote Organisational Cybersecurity
Project Description
Cyber-criminals often target system users, who are responsible for up to 95% of cyber breaches. This project investigates strategies to mitigate user vulnerabilities underpinning organisational cybersecurity breaches. Stage 1 of the research will entail a placement within the Airbus Cyberpsychology team to map out the problem space (tasks performed, decisions made, errors reported) to ensure real-world authenticity and the determination of risk factors for unsafe cybersecurity decisions. Stage 2 will be informed by the findings from Stage 1 and will involve experimental work manipulating: (i) representative tasks with different degrees of information sensitivity; and (ii) multiple stresses like time pressure and the presence of environmental distractions. Stage 3 will involve the laboratory development of an intervention (e.g., a decision-support system) for use within the Airbus workplace during a second placement.
