Project Title: Optimising Team Decision Making in Complex Environments

Project Description

Successful, real-world decision making often depends upon teams responding adaptively and flexibly to the demands of volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environments. It is well known that non-optimal teams can give rise to serious decision-making errors, particularly in high-risk situations in which operators face cognitive challenges such as distraction, cognitive load and indecision. The aims of this project are: (i) to understand the different manifestations of successful and unsuccessful team decision making, including the influence of exogeneous factors (i.e., organisational norms, culture framing) and endogenous factors (i.e., interpersonal trust, confidence); (ii) to develop theory-driven metrics that provide unobtrusive, objective, predictive and diagnostic information at the individual and team level; and (iii) to use this understanding to inform training interventions to support effective decision making.
