Applications are invited for a fully funded EPSRC DTP PhD Studentship to work with Prof Rachel McKendry (London Centre for Nanotechnology and Division of Medicine) on Quantum Materials for Early Disease Diagnosis, affiliated to the i-sense EPSRC IRC Next Steps Award in Agile Early Warning Sensing Systems for Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance ( www.i-sense.org.uk ).
We seek to recruit an outstanding engineer/physical scientist to build a new generation of quantum sensors for early disease diagnosis at the point of care. This exciting PhD project is aligned to the i-sense EPSRC IRC, a large interdisciplinary research collaboration, led by UCL, which aims to detect infectious diseases much earlier than ever before (Director Prof Rachel McKendry).
The research will aim to harness the unique properties of quantum materials to develop an ultra-sensitive diagnostic devices to detect the very early stages of infection. This project will involve the use of novel materials and optical detection systems.
Suitable candidates for this post will have a first or 2:1 class honours undergraduate degree and/or a post-graduate masters qualification in any of the following disciplines: Engineering, material science, physics, chemistry or a related discipline.
Applicants must be meet the EPSRC eligibility conditions to be eligible for the award – in summary this typically means that applicants must have no restrictions on their right to live in the UK permanently and have been resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to the studentship commencing.
