PhD Studentship in Physiology and Pharmacology: Investigating the Therapeutic Potential of Cannabidiol (CBD) in Cardiac Fibrosis

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Reading, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 May 2024

Supervisors:  Dr. Graeme Cottrell and Professor Darius Widera

Project Overview:

Cardiac fibrosis is a condition that is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fibrous tissue within the heart muscle and poses a significant threat to cardiovascular health. This fibrous tissue replaces healthy cardiac muscle cells, disrupting the natural structure and function of the heart. Linked with hypertension, heart failure, and myocardial infarction, cardiac fibrosis progresses over time, resulting in heart muscle stiffness, compromised pumping ability, and heightened arrhythmia risks, ultimately culminating in heart failure and associated complications.

Exciting breakthroughs in research have shed light on the potential of cannabidiol (CBD) to mitigate fibrosis and inflammation, offering hope for effective treatments. Yet, the precise mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of CBD remain elusive.

This ground-breaking project seeks to unravel the therapeutic potential of CBD in combating pivotal aspects of cardiac fibrosis, including inflammation levels, cardiomyocyte differentiation, and extracellular matrix remodelling. Under the expert guidance of Graeme Cottrell and Darius Widera, successful applicants will receive comprehensive training in cutting-edge techniques spanning cell biology, biochemistry, microscopy, molecular biology, experimental design, and data analysis.

Co-funded by MRX Medical, a leading player in cannabinoid medicines, this collaboration offers a unique opportunity to delve into drug discovery and translational science while gaining invaluable insights from an industry perspective. Join us in pioneering advancements in cardiovascular research and shaping the future of cardiac care.

Embark on a transformative journey, where scientific curiosity meets real-world impact. Apply now and be part of a collaborative effort to revolutionize cardiac fibrosis treatment.
