Overview
The School of Computing at Newcastle University expects to offer three full time PhD studentships on a subset of the following projects:
- UnReLoG – UNcertainty REasoning with LOgical Guarantees
- Generative AI Assistants in Software Development Education: Creating Tool Support and Exploring the Impact on Course Design and Student Learning Outcomes
- Improving immersive data exploration acceptance by providing visual connectivity clues between desktop and immersive representations
- Applications of Graph Width Parameters to Computational Complexity
- Investigations into bias within AI in Computer Science Education
- Transparency-Enhancing Technologies to Improve Security Self-Efficacy in Older Adults
- Safe AI-enabled Control of Autonomous Vehicles
- GenePhLo: genetic phase-based logic
- Building a Blockchain Simulator for Autonomous Vehicles
- Actionable deep learning under uncertainty for carbon-centric building operations

Prospective Students are encouraged to contact potential supervisors for more information on specific projects. Applicants can apply for up to three projects and should clearly indicate their preferred project(s) in their application.
Applicants should have a strong background in Computer Science or related area. High motivation for independent theoretical/computational work is essential. Skills and interest in project specific areas are also desirable.

Eligibility Criteria
This studentship is available to all applicants holding, or expecting to receive, a good (2:1 minimum or equivalent) bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or an international equivalent. Newcastle University values individual differences and the diversity that this brings. We want to ensure that no-one is at a disadvantage because of who they are. We encourage applications from under-represented groups, and requests for flexible study (e.g., part-time) are welcomed.
Home and international applicants (inc. EU) are welcome to apply and if successful will receive a full studentship.
Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills. International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme ) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
