PhD Studentship in Computer Science: Immersive Visualization
Award Summary
100% Home fees covered and a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £18,622 (2023/24 UKRI rate)
Overview
Recent years have seen a growing use of immersive visualization. Researchers quickly established that immersivity does not merely enhance existing visualization metaphors, but rather addresses specific challenges. It is commonly established that immersive visualisation enables situated analysis, spatial data and spatial task, collaboration, and presentation. These capabilities prove particularly valuable in domains like graph visualization, geospatial data representation, and teaching, as well as across various fields including health, energy, defence, and security. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms responsible for these enhanced performances are not yet fully comprehended.
This research work aims to investigate how people perceive and interpret information in immersive environments and rely on these findings to propose innovative methods of representing information to support data analysis. An anticipated outcome of this work is to identify the different perception mechanisms involve in immersive visualisation, to identify their uses to represent and interpret information, and finally to design a representation demonstrating the knowledge extracted from the previous tasks.
