Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates from the field of Biosciences for a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Chemistry for a start in October 2018.

We are looking to recruit students interested in a wide range of research areas within the discipline of Biosciences, examples of which include the following:

Food processing
Food chemistry
Industrial biotechnology
Microbiology
Bio-molecular technology
Brewing and fermentation sciences

About the Centre

The Centre is developed in collaboration with industry and as a partnership of several disciplines including Chemistry, Biosciences and Engineering.With a student-centred approach as its main ethos, the Centre delivers a high quality multidisciplinary training programme delivering the skills in the areas of business and innovation, science communication, project management, team work and career development.

During the first year on the programme the students will, supported by the CDT staff and academics from Biosciences, Engineering and Chemistry, develop their research proposal in partnership with a relevant industry partner.

In addition, a part of our training programme, the students are strongly encouraged to carry out an external placement in industry, another research institution or other organisation.

Entry requirements

Ideally, candidates are expected to hold at least an upper second class honours degree in the field of Biosciences or Biotechnology from a 4-year undergraduate course or a 3-year undergraduate course plus one year industrial experience.
