PhD Studentship In Biomedical Engineering: Pioneering Next-Generation of Biomimetic Metamaterials for Biomedical Applications

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: Bolton, SCOTLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 08 Mar 2024

The School of Engineering at the University of Bolton invites applications for a Ph.D. studentship available from 1st March 2024 within the Biomedical Engineering Research team. This project aims to pioneer a novel structure with a combination of properties for Tissue Engineering, ushering in the next generation of medical devices. We have successfully developed innovative 3D structures at Bolton, delving into multiscale structures in biological tissues like bone. Our expertise is translated into designing metamaterials with a tailored structure to create artificial implants mimicking natural structures.

We seek an outstanding graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related engineering disciplines. Applicants should hold a master’s or an equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Consideration may also be given to applicants with a first or upper second-class degree or equivalent experience in relevant Physical Sciences/Engineering disciplines. A strong motivation to work at the forefront of biomedical engineering in an international, multidisciplinary research team is essential. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is a requirement, particularly for non-native English speakers. A solid engineering background is crucial, and experience in 3D structure development, numerical simulation (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS), electrospinning, mechanical testing, biological testing, cell culturing, and/or programming is desirable.

The successful candidate, who will become a full-time research student, will be expected to undertake up to 6 hours of teaching each week during term time as well as some administrative duties. Experience in assisting with teaching and learning in Higher Education is desirable, along
with good communication skills.

Our Metamaterials Research Team has a strong national and international reputation led by Dr Sanami and is supported by access to state-of-the-art infrastructure including materials processing and manufacturing and testing facilities, nanomaterials characterisation, additive manufacturing facilities, complemented by a suite of materials modelling and analysing capabilities.

Prospective candidates can contact Dr Mohammad Sanami (Tel: 01204 903109, email: [email protected] ) for an informal discussion relating to this opportunity.

The student will receive UK/EU tuition fees and a tax-free bursary of £18622 per annum for 3-year duration of the project.

International applicants are also welcome to apply.

Closing date for applications is 08TH March 2024.
