Electroceramics made of polycrystalline metal oxides exhibit a wide range of interesting and useful electrical, magnetic, optical and mechanical properties such as high temperature superconductivity in YBa2 Cu3 O7 , ferroelectricity and giant relative permittivity in BaTiO3 , piezoelectricity and coupling between mechanical energy and electricity in Pb(ZrTi)O3 , high oxide ion conductivity in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Electroceramics constitute performance-determining components in various modern electronic and energy devices.
We have recently developed innovative technologies to manufacture new electroceramics with exceptionally high electrical conductivity that have not yet been achieved using conventional techniques. This project will capitalise on our recent discovery to apply the newly proposed manufacturing solution to a wider range of electroceramics. This project is expected to lead to new electroceramics in a variety of electronic and energy research areas including new superconductors, thermoelectrics for electricity from waste heat, electrode materials for fuel cells and supercapacitors, and photocatalysts for water splitting.
We are seeking a bright, highly motivated individual who has or is predicted to be awarded a first class or 2.1 honours degree in materials science, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, or a relevant discipline.
Due to funding restrictions this position is only available to those that are eligible for home fees only.
The studentship covers tuition fees and a tax-free stipend (£15,609 per annum for 2021/22 academic year) for three years.
Supervised by Dr Ming Li and Professor David Grant.
The position is to start in October 2021.
Application deadline: Tuesday 31 August 2021.
