A 3-year funded PhD opportunity is available on the topic of ‘Exploring digital technology for remote assessment and monitoring of outcomes in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)’.  The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Maddie Groom, Dr Charlotte Hall and Dr Jake Andrews in the School of Medicine, experts in ADHD, remote monitoring, and the evaluation and implementation of digital technology for in healthcare services.  

We are recruiting a PhD candidate to join the Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. You will be based in the Institute of Mental Health and join the vibrant and supportive Mental Health & Technology theme of the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. You will also be aligned to the Centre for ADHD and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CANDAL), a research centre of excellence in the Institute of Mental Health, and MindTech, a health technology research centre in the School of Medicine.

The project will evaluate current and emerging digital technologies that offer the potential to support remote monitoring of ADHD treatment outcomes. Effective treatment (including rapid dose optimisation of medication) is crucial to improve symptoms and outcomes in ADHD and relies on frequent symptom monitoring. This is currently difficult to achieve within clinical services using traditional approaches such as rating scales and in-person appointments. Digital technologies for remote monitoring can be standardised, objective, and delivered at scale and therefore offer the potential to augment and enhance monitoring of symptoms and other outcomes in ADHD. Despite this potential, digital technology for remote monitoring of outcomes in ADHD remains under-explored and under-developed. The studentship will use a range of methodological approaches to investigate current approaches to treatment monitoring, explore possible digital solutions, and evaluate their clinical utility. Full training in relevant research methods will be provided.

The studentship is funded by government funding through the ‘Mental Health Mission’ and will provide an annual stipend to cover living costs (£18,622) and will cover Home University tuition fees for the duration of the project (36 months).  International students may apply, but the studentship will not cover international tuition fees. 

Starting date: 1st July 2024.

Requirements:

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Psychology, Psychiatry, Health Sciences, or a related discipline.

Essential: The successful candidate will be highly motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills and some experience with research including qualitative and quantitative methods.

Desirable: Experience in digital technology, child mental health, or healthcare services. Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. MSc in a relevant field.
