PhD Studentship: Development and Validation of Techniques Bridging Cell Culture and/or Reconstructed Skin Models and Human Clinical Testing
Project description
This is a four-year PhD project sponsored by the BBSRC and Glaxo Smith Kline, UK. The UCL Skin and Buccal research has a strong track record in the development and validation of ex vivo models for delivery of actives in humans. The overall aim of this multidisciplinary PhD project is to develop a model of oral mucosal tissue that retains important functional features such as viability, structure, metabolism, lipid synthesis and barrier function.
Over the course of the project, the student will be trained in the use of conventional models of the buccal mucosa. Other major activities will include (i) identification of suitable culture media for new models of the buccal mucosa (ii) Confirmation of barrier function properties of the model and (iii) assessment of tissue biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress
For further reading see also “Types and evaluation of in vitro penetration models for buccal mucosal delivery. Wang et al. Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology., 61, 1021222”
Publications from the project are strongly encouraged. The student will be expected to visit GSK to present their research findings and the student will be supported to attend a number of international and national conferences as part of their professional development. The candidate is expected to hold a first degree in pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy, biophysics, bioengineering, chemistry or chemical engineering (minimum 2.1) and experience with bioengineering techniques would be advantageous. Ideally, the student would be able to start in October/November 2022 and will join a friendly and vibrant research community.
Main methods and techniques
Biological sample preparation; in vitro permeation testing; identification and assessment of biomarkers; tissue culture; high performance liquid chromatography; gas chromatography
mass spectrometry; tape stripping; trans epidermal water loss measurement; infrared spectroscopy; statistical analysis
