Project outline

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a 3-year PhD studentship to work on state-of-the-art research on antenna development for IoT applications. In this research, you are expected to develop antennas for IoT applications, such as multifunctional antennas for wearable devices, healthcare, smart home equipment, agriculture, smart cities, and industrial applications. You will also expect to leverage machine learning algorithms to optimize antenna design processes, such as improving efficiency, reducing costs, and accelerating the design cycle. The suitable candidate will carry out the research at the University of Hertfordshire.

Entry requirements

Essential

  • A first-class UK honours degree or equivalent in any electrical engineering-related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of antenna theory and microwave circuits.
  • Experience working in Radiofrequency (RF) labs including performing the S-parameters and radiation pattern measurements.
  • Familiar with the EM simulation software packages such as Ansys HFSS, CST, etc.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage time independently to meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information.
  • Good IT literacy.
  • Applicants must be self-motivated.
  • International/EU applicants: must meet the minimum English language requirements, which include an IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • A relevant master’s degree will be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Publications in high-impact international journals and conferences
  • Experience in optimization algorithms.
  • Good knowledge of antenna fabrications and good prototyping skills.
  • Familiar with MATLAB.

Funding information

The studentship is open to both UK and international candidates. They are funded for three years and cover both the fees and an annual stipend of around £18,622 (tax-free). Applicants from outside the UK or EU are eligible.
