PhD Studentship: Analysis of a Children’s Rights-based Approach to the Prevention of Violence Against Girls in Football

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Loughborough, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Jan 2024

Despite the fact that violence against women and girls (VAWG) is recognised as a human rights violation, academic research on the VAMG in sport that uses human rights and offers rights perspectives is limited. This project aims to address this gap. In doing so, the project will focus on girls' football and adopt a children's rights-based approach (CRBA) as its conceptual lenses to analyse prevention activities and good practices designed to tackle the VAMG.

Girls' football is the focused area of the project in the context of VAMG in sport. As women's football gains more visibility and participation, it is crucial to examine the structural causes of gender-based violence that may persist in the industry. By focusing on girls' football, this project aims to shed light on the specific challenges and opportunities for preventing violence and promoting gender equality in this growing sector of sport. CRBA is crucial for addressing violence against girls in sport because it is grounded in the normative principles and standards of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

This approach prioritises the practical implementation of children's rights in all activities concerning them, including sports. By adopting CRBA, this research project aims to contribute to the alignment of football's policies and regulatory frameworks with the rights standards and principles of the CRC, thus providing a solid foundation for preventing violence and promoting the well-being of girls in football.
