PhD Position Within the Field of Ice Action on Structures for Offshore Wind

About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD position at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering .

The candidate shall address the design and operation of structures for the exploration of Offshore Wind energy in areas with sea ice. We want to develop a meso-scale dynamic sea ice drift model that can use available met-ocean data (from satellites and weather forecast) and predict the local ice drift velocity around a fixed structure. The output from this model will give input into the existing SAMCoT IIV model (developed at TU-Delft) that simulates the coupled ice-structure interaction and can be used to predict the structural response.

The strategic ambition is to maintain world leading group on ice action on slender offshore structure that was initiated through SAMCoT and established through FATICE. The group consists of NTNU, TU-Delft, HSVA (Hamburg ship model basin), TUHH (Technical university og Hamburg) and Aalto.

The position reports to Professor and Academic Programme Director, Knut Vilhelm Høyland.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • The candidates main duty is to carry out research leading to a PhD, but it is also expected that the  candidates takes part in discussions with other PhD students / Post-Docs or researchers addressing relevant topics
  • Independently set up research plans and conduct them accordingly
  • Take lead in writing research papers under supervision
  • Contribute in supervising master students within the field
  • Comply with the PhD training programme of the Faculty of Engineering

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology, applied Mathematics or Applied Physics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale . Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

  • Relevant field experience may be an advantage
  • Programming experience may be an advantage
  • Good written and oral English language skills

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years (without required teaching duties), and startup will be within 20.08.2020. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Engineering: https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/phd-information .

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
