About the position

The PhD position is at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering , NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. The candidate will be part of the Hydraulic Engineering group ( ) and cooperate internationally.

This position is a fixed term, full time (100 %) position for 3 years.

The current project proposes a phd position to work on the CFD modelling of flow and sediment at Sediment Bypass Tunnels (SBTs) with a primary focus on the hydraulic design as well as positioning, and a secondary one on the possibilities to use SBTs as fish passage structures. The SO-position will aim for closing the gap between experimental and numerical modelling as well as for bringing forward the state of art in research in the interdisciplinary field of engineering and ecology by collaborating nationally with academia (FME HydroCen and IPN Storivan) and industry (Statkraft, NINA), as well as internationally with our partners in Switzerland and India.

The position reports to Professor Nils Ruther.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Setup and conduct CFD simulation of flow and sediment transport in SBTs for different configurations for an optimized design
  • Collect data from existing literature as well as setup and conduct physical scale model experiment of SBTs in order to serve the numerical model results as verification
  • Identify hydraulic challenges by means of 3D CFD, when fish passages structures are to be used in combination with SBTs
  • Write peer-reviewed articles based on the research results
  • Be co-supervisor for Master students in the relevant field of research

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Civil Engineering [focus: Hydraulic or Mechanical Engineering] Computer Science, Physics or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale . Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral English skills
  • Experience in numerical modelling and general understanding of fluid dynamics
  • Experience with planning and design of hydraulic structures at hydro power plants and with sediment transport analysis
  • Prior academic output
  • Prior relevant job experience
  • A motivation letter on why the candidate wants to pursue an academic education and why she/he thinks he will be successful

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years (without required teaching duties), and startup will be within 20.08.2020. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Civil Engineering.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
