PhD in Safe Artificial intelligence (AI), Philosophy

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: York, ENGLAND
Deadline: 17 Jan 2024

The Department of Philosophy at the University of York is part of the first multidisciplinary centre for doctoral training focused solely on the safety of Artificial intelligence (AI).

Funded by UKRI, the SAINTS CDT will bring together staff and students from diverse disciplines such as philosophy, computer science, law, sociology and economics. The Centre will nurture the next generation of safe AI experts, and create a lasting community that will pioneer new evidence-based policy and practices for safe AI.

Our vision is to train future leaders with the research expertise and collaborative skills to ensure that the benefits of AI systems are realised without introducing harm as the systems and their environments evolve.

Research will be focused on the lifelong safety assurance of increasingly autonomous AI systems in dynamic and uncertain contexts, building on methodologies and concepts in disciplines spanning AI, safety science, philosophy, law, sociology and health sciences.

The Department of Philosophy will be recruiting two of the new PhD students into the Centre. Stage One applications are open until 12 noon GMT on Wednesday 17 January (no research proposal or transcripts are required at this stage).

The PhD in Safe AI can be studied for four years full-time or eight years part-time. PhD researchers will receive a tax-free stipend and payment of annual tuition fees. Funding is also available for researchers to attend relevant events and conferences.

We welcome applications from both UK (home) and international applicants and from a diverse range of multidisciplinary backgrounds.
