PhD Candidate in Safe Operations in Hydrogen-Based Industry

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Jan 2023

About the position

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions requires fundamental transformations for the industrial sector. However, decarbonisation pathways are less well-defined. In particular, the use of hydrogen for heating processes may carry a number of operational uncertainties given its emerging character and the relatively reduced safety-related experience.

This PhD position is funded by the European project HyInHeat on “Hydrogen technologies for decarbonization of Industrial Heating processes” and will involve internationally renowned research institutes and industries. You will work in collaboration with Aachen University (Germany).

Widespread deployment of hydrogen technologies in society must be accompanied by the development of a workforce with training, competence and skills that fulfil the needs of the prospective labour market.

You will investigate conditions and define support for safe operations within industrial heating processes. Emphasis on hydrogen hazard awareness and overarching societal and environmental aspects will require an interdisciplinary approach, ranging from consequence analysis to risk perception.

You will have the chance to collect and use first-hand data from industry, and thus liaise with relevant sector companies
