About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD position (3 years) at the Department of Design (ID) at NTNU. The position is connected to the four-year project “ #Care4YoungTeeth<3”  

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

#Care4YoungTeeth<3 is funded by The Research Council of Norway’s BEHANDLING work programme within the thematic area Health and discipline Oral Health. The project is led by SINTEF Digital, Department of Health with NTNU’s Department of Design as one of ten partners. The PhD candidate will work closely with the project partners from the public and private sectors. Co-supervision will be provided  by The University of Sheffield’s School of Dentistry.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to participate in a research endeavor focusing on the research question: How can adolescents can be supported to take care of their teeth through co-created health-promoting products, tools, and service adaptations? The project will employ participatory, practice-based research and explorative case studies to add knowledge to service innovation in oral care, engaging and empowering adolescents.

The PhD candidate will be supervised by Associate professor Marikken Høiseth with co-supervision from Associate professor Ole Andreas Alsos and Professor Zoe Marshman, and is expected to work from Gløshaugen campus in Trondheim. Formally the PhD candidate will report to the Head of Department, Dr. Sara Brinch.

Duties of the position

  • Contribute to #Care4YoungTeeth<3 through leading a specific work package (PhD project) in the project revolving around the following research question: How can adolescents be supported to take care of their teeth through co-created health-promoting products, tools, and service adaptations?
  • Strong collaboration with the other partners in the project is expected
  • Publish research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences. Exhibitions, seminars and workshops are examples of relevant dissemination arenas.
  • Participation in the supervision of bachelor and master students may be possible.
  • Expected start: December 2021

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in at least three of the following six fields: 1) co-design, 2) service innovation, 3) health-related design, 4) dental/health and care services, 5) health promotion and health communication, 6) research or practice oriented toward children and adolescents.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission and financing to be accepted to the PhD-programme .
  • Quality and relevance of the submitted research proposal and, if relevant, enclosed academic works.
  • Language proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Students who can document that they are in the finale stages of a master’s degree may be assessed for the position. 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Given the project’s focus on the Norwegian context, it is expected that candidates are able to read, speak and process the Norwegian language or another Scandinavian language at a high academic level.
  • Experience with academic writing
  • Experience from research projects
  • Relevant work experience

Salary and conditions

  • PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • The period of employment is three years.
  • Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in PhD Design   within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
  • The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
  • The position is subject to external funding.
  • It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

About the application

  • Academic works – published or unpublished – that you would like to be considered in the assessment (up to 5 works)
  • Name and address of three referees

If all, or parts, of your education has been taken abroad, we also ask you to attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both bachelor's and master's education, in addition to other higher education. Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
