Overview

Newcastle Law School  at Newcastle University invites applicants for a doctoral studentship in critical outer space law. This is an open call and candidates should apply with their own project proposal based on their own interests. Projects may include one or a combination of the following approaches: feminist, queer, postcolonial/TWAIL, posthuman/new materialist, Marxist, and other critical legal approaches. The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Emily Jones and will join a vibrant research community in the School and Newcastle University. Candidates are encouraged to apply with a project that they are interested in which can draw on a variety of methods as appropriate to the project design, including archival work, discourse analysis and the application of critical theory and interviews, among others. Project ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Projects that seek to re-imagine outer space law using critical approaches
  • Discussions of the links and dissonances between outer space law and other areas of international law, such as international environmental law or the law of the sea
  • Indigenous knowledge and outer space law
  • Projects focusing on the rights of outer space/the rights of nature as applied to outer space law
  • Focused analyses of key legal principles e.g. the common heritage of humankind
  • Analyses of key actors and dominant voices in the making of outer space law
  • Historical analysis of outer space law
  • Analyses of outer space law in conversation with other disciplines, such as science fiction or artistic practice

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant must have a 2:1 Honours degree in law or a related subject and a master’s degree in international law or a related subject awarded at a Merit or above. Extenuating circumstances will be considered if an applicant does not meet these requirements but a solid background in public international law is essential.

A demonstrable interest in one of the following areas is also desirable: outer space law, environmental law, feminist and queer legal approaches, TWAIL, Marxist legal theory, posthuman/new materialist legal theory or other critical perspectives.

This award is available to home and international candidates. Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS 7.0 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in writing, and 6.0 in all other sub-skills).
