Project supervisors: Any available supervisor in the Department of Mathematics, whose research includes Pure Mathematics, Probability or Data Science

Project description: 

We invite applications for PhD study in Mathematics at Swansea University. This will be funded by the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research from their UKRI/EPSRC award “Heilbronn Doctoral Partnership (HDP)”.  

In addition to undertaking cutting-edge research, student on this programme may expect to participate in summer workshops in years 1-3. It is anticipated these will be about 4 weeks in length and residential in nature (with extra costs covered as appropriate).  

The research project can be in one of the fields below: 

  • Algebra, Geometry and Topology 
  • Mathematical and computational methods in machine learning and artificial intelligence 
  • Partial Differential Equations 
  • Stochastic Analysis and (Noncommutative) Probability  

Detailed information about research directions in the Department of Mathematics can be found at the Research and Impact  webpage of the Department. Applicants should demonstrate interest in one or more of the above research fields.  

Candidates from traditionally under-represented groups in mathematics are strongly encouraged to apply.

Skills/Qualifications

Candidates must hold a first or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree with merit, in a relevant discipline (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University). Please note that you may need to provide evidence of your English Language proficiency. 

English Language: IELTS 6.5 Overall (with no individual component below 6.0) or Swansea University recognised equivalent. We prefer candidates to have already met the English Language requirements at the point of application, although this is not a requirement.

Please note that the programme requires some applicants to hold ATAS clearance, further details on ATAS scheme eligibility are available on the UK Government website.  

ATAS clearance IS NOT required to be held as part of the scholarship application process, successful award winners (as appropriate) are provided with details as to how to apply for ATAS clearance in tandem with scholarship course offer. 


Additional Information
Benefits

This scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI rate (currently £18,622 for 2023/24) for four years.

Additional research expenses will also be available.
