MRes + PhD studentships in Cancer Biology within the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre (1+3 years)

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Deadline: 15 Nov 2021

Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre (https://crukcambridgecentre.org.uk/content/mres-phd-programme-cancer-biology ) has a fully-funded innovative MRes + PhD programme, designed to give postgraduate students a broad understanding of both the basic biology and the clinical management of the whole spectrum of cancer.

The CRUK Cambridge Centre is a dynamic collaboration of academic researchers, clinicians, and the pharmaceutical and biotech industries based in the Cambridge area. More than 700 laboratory researchers and physicians are united through a 12 programme structure (https://crukcambridgecentre.org.uk/research/centres-12-research-programmes ) that brings together investigators working on: Thoracic, Breast, Haematological, Brain, Ovarian, Paediatric, Pancreatic, Urological cancers, Advanced Cancer Imaging, Cell and Molecular Biology, Early detection and the lastly Onco-Innovation which provides a collaboration point for our colleagues in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. AstraZeneca, Medimmune) as well as members from University departments in the physical sciences.

The first year MRes degree comprises two research rotations, a weekly 'Lectures in Cancer Biology & Medicine' series, together with a week of intensive teaching in genomic medicine, and a one- to two-week placement in a patient-facing setting (COVID-19 restrictions permitting). This placement will enable insight into the rewards and challenges of cancer research and development of diagnostics and treatments. Project write-ups, oral presentations and development of a PhD proposal are also integral to the programme. Continuation onto the PhD in year 2 will be conditional on the student successfully completing both their rotations and the final viva, which is based on their PhD proposal. Continuation recommendations from the viva examiners are then passed to the Degree committee for overall approval. Only both the completion of the course and a successful viva will allow for progression onto the PhD track. The PhD will be a fully-funded three-year course, usually in one of the student's original rotation project host laboratories, thereby allowing for an in-depth study of a particular area of cancer biology.

Five CRUK Cambridge Centre MRes + PhD studentships are available for non-clinical applicants, to commence in October 2022. Support includes a generous stipend at £19,000 per annum, research costs and fees at the Home (UK) rate. In addition, the CRUK Cambridge Centre and the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust provide joint funding for up to two overseas, non-clinical students. If your fee status is classified as overseas, you must also apply for the University funding competition to obtain funding for the higher fee rate.
