Lecturer in Law (Education and Scholarship)

Updated: 27 days ago
Location: Penryn, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 23 Apr 2024

This permanent, full time post is available from 1st September 2024 (or date by agreement) to join a thriving and dynamic law programme, based at our Penryn campus in Cornwall.

Summary of the role

Our offering to students in Cornwall is unique; our law degrees form part of a portfolio of programmes run in collaboration with our Business School, such as LLB Law with Business and BBL Bachelor of Business with Laws. We have plans to expand delivery to new inter-disciplinary programmes. Our pedagogical approach is different from many traditional law schools, with a much stronger focus on experiential learning. This includes significant amounts of small group task-based working and research projects as part of the curriculum.

The role

We are seeking applications from candidates with an academic or professional background with the ability to teach on a range of core modules including Trusts, Land, Contract, Public Law and Tort. Expertise and enthusiasm to teach on other optional modules, such as Corporate Law, Environmental Law or Law & Technology would also be welcomed. An interest in developing pedagogies in legal education will be an asset.

The post will include working as part of a growing team to design and deliver excellent teaching. The position would suit an outstanding teacher who has a passion for education and learning, and for students at or near to the completion of their PhD.

About you

You will:

  • possess sufficient breadth or depth of specialist and core knowledge in the discipline, demonstrated by a PhD (or nearing completion) or with established experience in legal academia or legal practice demonstrating the core knowledge relating to teach and support learning on law modules and to develop teaching programmes
  • use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students
  • participate in and develop external networks, for example, to contribute to student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, generate income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities
  • have evidence of excellent teaching identified by peer review or indicators of excellent teaching potential
  • be expected to work towards Fellowship of the HEA and to attend formal CPD relating to this

Please ensure that you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.

What we can offer you:

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines
  • support teams that understand the University-wide teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly
  • an Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics, providing specialist support for external engagement and development
  • our Exeter Academic initiative, which supports high performing academics to achieve their potential and develop their career
  • a multitude of staff benefits including sector leading benefits around maternity, adoption and shared parental leave (up to 26wks full pay), paternity leave (up to 6wks full pay), and a new Fertility Treatment Policy; and
  • a beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Cornwall
