Overview

About the Role

The Department of English in the School of English and Drama in Queen Mary’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to appoint a Lecturer in English Literature. This is a Teaching and Scholarship focused position, aimed at developing the Department’s provision of innovative teaching for home and visiting international associate students. We particularly welcome applicants with specialisms in one or more of the following areas across any period: urban cultures, global Anglophone literatures or interdisciplinary approaches to English. This role offers an exceptional opportunity for a passionate educator to lead in student education and experience, with specific focus on student support for transition to HE, progression and retention. In addition, the post-holder may contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at all levels, in team-teaching and by developing distinctive new modules in their specialist areas. Alongside playing a key role in enhancing the Department’s development and delivery of teaching provision, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to lead in the development of its student support strategy. We are happy to consider applications for the role part-time (0.5 fte) or full-time.

About You

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in English, or a related field, with established and demonstrable expertise in pedagogy and the wider student experience. You will be an enthusiastic, committed and innovative teacher, with the ability to take a leading role in teaching and administration, with specific focus on student support and engagement. You will join a Department committed to an interdisciplinary and global approach to Anglophone literary studies, with significant expertise right across the wider field of English studies. Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in large and small group settings is an essential requirement. We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or Other Minority Ethnic groups and women as these groups are underrepresented at this level at Queen Mary.

QMUL is strongly committed to the development of all its staff, and we will ensure that the successful candidate has the opportunity to develop their teaching and administrative skills. Colleagues in teaching-focused roles have access to a full range of professional development support, including an annual allowance to support their scholarship or pedagogical activities. Queen Mary recently revised the university’s promotion guidelines to provide comprehensive and clear promotion routes for T&S staff up to and including the academic rank of professor.
