This fund has been set up in memory of the University of Edinburgh’s International Relations Professor John Peterson to support PhD study in Politics and International Relations (PIR) at the School of Social and Political Science. Professor John Peterson was at the forefront of teaching and research in areas including US-European relations, EU policy, US foreign policy and international trade. While at Edinburgh he engaged countless students, scholars and practitioners through his lectures and seminars, policy analysis, research projects and supervision of research students.

The John Peterson Memorial Scholarship will support one PhD scholarship in PIR with a particular focus on PhD study in areas linked to EU politics, US foreign policy, and transatlantic relations.

Eligibility

This Scholarship is available only to students intending to commence PhD Politics & International Relations study (full-time or part-time) in September 2024 and who are pursuing a PhD topic in one of the following fields:

  • European Union policy and politics
  • European Union external relations and foreign policy
  • Transatlantic relations (including trade)
  • US foreign policy in the areas of trade, climate change, or the environment

Please note this award is only for PhD study, not for MSc by Research.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they can meet the English Language requirements of the University of Edinburgh: English Language Requirements .

Award details

The scholarship is available as PhD Politics & International Relations scholarship only. The programme will commence in September 2024. It includes:

Full tuition fees (UK, EU or Overseas level) (3 years full-time or 6 years part-time)

A first year stipend (full-time equivalent, pro-rata for part-time) set to the UKRI level for 2024/25 (uplifting in Year 2 for a part-time awardee). For reference, the UKRI level for 2024/25 is set at £19,237 for full-time students, or the pro rata equivalent for part-time students. Note - the stipend does not continue for remaining years.

Students can also draw on the School’s PGR Research Support Fund (external to the scholarship)

The scholarship award application process involves two main applications

Application for the PhD Politics & International Relations programme

Please note: you will only be able to apply for the scholarship after you have submitted an application for the PhD Politics programme.

The application to study is made via the University's online application system, EUCLID.

The application to study must be submitted at least 5 working days prior to the scholarship application deadline.

You do not need to wait to receive an offer to study before applying for the John Peterson Memorial Scholarship - but you must submit a complete application to study by the deadline or your scholarship application will not be considered.

Application for the John Peterson Memorial Scholarship

Once you have submitted your application for study, you can then submit your scholarship application.

Application to the scholarship is via the University's online scholarships application form located within the EUCLID applicant hub.

Selection process

The scholarship applicants will be ranked by the selection panel, and the successful candidate notified in Spring.
