The Rosalind Franklin Institute, the UK institute for technology development in life science, funded by the UK government, harnesses the physical sciences to understand human disease and its effects on the body. We drive bold and innovative technology development through interdisciplinary collaborations across our scientific research teams. This includes electron microscopes which are capable of imaging of biological molecules in motion and reaching near atomic level resolution, and building a unique multimodal imaging mass spectrometer. Alongside the production of novel chemical ligands or protein binders to allow the targeting of specific sites of interest within cells, tissues or organisms.

We are recruiting students from any scientific, mathematical, engineering or computing discipline to work on the development of instruments across our Themes.

Our one-of-a-kind fully funded PhD programme will provide high-level interdisciplinary skills training, individual mentoring, access to industrial collaborations through a team of world-leading supervisors and new laboratory facilities.

Franklin PhD students will have a wide-ranging choice of projects, which will have real-world impact and collaborate with universities and partners across the UK. They will receive an enhanced annual stipend and other benefits shown here .
