Fellowship in Computer Science

Updated: about 2 years ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Queens’ College is seeking to appoint a new Fellow in Computer Science from Easter 2022. The new Fellow will be able to teach a variety of topics across the first two years of the Computer Science Tripos. Preference may be given to applicants whose teaching interests include courses with a strong mathematical component. It is expected that the appointee will assist with Direction of Studies, particularly at Part IA or Part IB. The appointment is for three years in the first instance and renewable.

Queens' currently admits eight undergraduate Computer Science students each year. We have built a vibrant student community and run a variety of academic and extracurricular activities to support learning within and across year groups, taking advantage of both the College’s modern teaching facilities and its ancient fabric. The College has been a strong supporter of teaching innovation. This appointment will supplement the College's existing Fellows in the subject: Professor Alastair Beresford, Professor Neil Lawrence, Professor Andrew Rice and Dr Ramsey Faragher. The College has been fortunate in attracting excellent students in Computer Science over many years and alumni include Dr Demis Hassabis (CEO of Deepmind), who has supported an eponymous Fellowship.

Fellows are paid to direct studies and typically undertake 40, 80 or 120 hours of paid teaching per academic year. In addition, the College provides Fellows with seven meals per week, financial support towards academic expenses and the use of an office for teaching and academic study. Fellows are normally expected to reside in or near Cambridge during term time and take an active part in the wider academic life of the College. The Fellowship will complement the postholder’s existing primary research or teaching role in the University or industry. A College fellowship offers access to a rich intellectual and social life within Queens’, as well as the chance to work with outstanding students.

The successful candidate will be offered either the Hassabis Fellowship in Computer Science (an Official Fellowship) or a Bye Fellowship. Official Fellowships can only be offered to applicants who hold a qualifying office in the University, such as a University Teaching Officer, and come with membership of the Governing Body and the requirement to act as a Trustee. All applicants may be considered for a Bye Fellowship.

Informal enquiries to the Senior Tutor, Dr Andrew Thompson ([email protected] ).

Applications including a covering letter, CV and statement of teaching philosophy (of no more than 1000 words) to be sent to [email protected] by 10 January 2022. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in early February 2022.
