As a PhD student in the School of English, you will be studying and researching in one of the largest and the most successful English departments in the UK. You will be an active researcher in a thriving research enviornment, joining a community of world-leading researchers who are pushing the boundaries of literary and linguistic study.

We have over fifty academic staff, each of them experts in their field and with many years of experience in research supervision. Our cutting-edge research interests extend from the Gothic to applied linguistics, and from animal studies to site-specific performance. We are actively engaged in interdisciplinary centres and networks which extend well beyond the School of English.

You will have access to state of the art library facilities, both on campus and further afield, as well as dedicated postgraduate study space within the School of English. We encourage our PhD students to get involved in the many reading groups, research seminars and academic conferences which we host each year. The School of English delivers a range of activities that spans teaching, research and public engagement. These, together with our extensive programme of events, add an extra, vibrant dimension to life in the School.

About the School of English

Creative, critical, civic-minded and collaborative, the School of English at the University of Sheffield is one of the largest and most successful English departments in the UK.
