Job Summary  Applications are invited for a fully-funded a postgraduate research assistant position that will also lead to the award of a PhD at the Department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College London working with Dr Alex Whittaker.

You will join the multinational S2S-FUTURE Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network as an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) and you will be employed as a research assistant at Imperial College.  Simultaneously, you will also be enrolled as a PhD student. The training network ‘S2S-FUTURE: Signal propagation from source to sink for the future of Earth resources and energies’ involves Imperial College and six other European universities, who have recruited.  The project is funded to end March 2024 in the first instance but we anticipate that it will be extended for up to 12 months.

Duties and responsibilities

The main responsibility of the post is to produce research that will contribute to the S2S initiative and to produce material for your PhD thesis.  You will receive academic support and guidance, but you will be expected to develop your own research ideas and communicate your research findings in conference presentations, written reports and published papers.  You will need to engage with peers and members of the European Training Network, and to undertake the training and activities developed for the programme alongside your research.

The most important requirement is that you the drive, commitment and motivation to undertake PhD level study over a 3 year time period.

The initial end date for this position will be 31/03/2024, with a further extension of 6-12 months planned.

  • This is an EU Horizon 2020 funded position. You must meet the mobility and eligibility requirements of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network.
  • You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the past three years.
  • You must meet the definition of an ESR: i.e. you are a researcher without a PhD, who is in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career, measured from the date of obtaining the degree that would formally entitle you to embark on a doctorate. Typically, this would be the date that you obtained your Masters degree.
  • Your employment contract is fixed term and will be no more than 3 years. You will complete the key research for the PhD thesis in this time period.  The thesis itself must be written up and submitted within 4 years of PhD registration.
  • The starting salary is fixed as part of the EU grant agreement and is determined according to a fixed set of criteria. The amount you receive depends on our personal circumstances including whether you have family dependants and whether you choose to join the pension scheme at Imperial College.
