- Tuition fees
- Maintenance stipend (the annual maintenance stipend for 2023-24 is £18,662)
- A research training support grant

- An additional disability allowance can be provided where appropriate
Students opting to study part-time will receive a pro-rata maintenance stipend.

Application procedure
Stage 1:
You must submit a complete programme application for your chosen PhD programme by the funding deadline for your school (below). This is to ensure you hold an offer by the time of the NWCDTP committee. Otherwise, you will not be included in the competition.
Section 9 of the application asks for your funding intentions. Add a funding source and populate this as below:

Stage 2:
The completed AHRC NWCDTP Application Form and Equality and Diversity Monitoring Form must be submitted to the Humanities Doctoral Academy via [email protected] no later than 5pm GMT 2 February 2024. Please note that this is a strict deadline and applications received after 5pm will not be included in the competition.

To be considered in the AHRC NWCDTP competition, your research proposal must be no longer than 1500 words. If you revise your research proposal following submission of your programme application, please attach the latest draft of your proposal along with the AHRC NWCDTP application form in your email to [email protected].
The academic transcripts and references submitted with your programme application will be attached to your AHRC NWCDTP application form and provided to the panels for review.

Selection body
Applications are reviewed through a series of panels at School level, by AHRC NWCDTP Pathway representatives and leads, and by AHRC NWCDTP Institutional leads.

This competition has now closed for 2024 entry. Deadlines for 2025 entry will be published here in due course.
Decision date
We expect to communicate the outcome to 2024 entry applicants by 7 May 2024.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide feedback on individual applications, as outcomes are determined by several panels across a number of institutions.
Deferral information
Offers of funding are not deferrable. If you cannot start your programme by the date mentioned in your studentship offer letter, the award will be withdrawn. You are permitted to re-apply in future.

+2 Applications:
To be eligible for +2 funding, you must be enrolled upon a PhD Programme at the University of Manchester with at least 2 years remaining, and you must meet the academic requirements for +3 funding, specified above. To apply, please submit your latest 1500 word research proposal along with the completed AHRC NWCDTP application form to the Humanities Doctoral Academy via [email protected] no later than 5pm GMT, 2 February 2023.
