The Chair of Systems Design at ETH Zurich is looking for 1-2 student research assistants to work on our data project "DemocraSci" as well as on an SNF project.


Project background

We are looking for 1-2 student research assistants to work on our data project “DemocraSci – a research platform for data-driven democracy studies in Switzerland” and our SNF-project “Analyzing Co-Sponosrship Networks from 129 Years of the Swiss Federal Asssembly”. The projects use almost 130 years of Swiss parliamentary data to create a comprehensive and searchable database on Swiss politics.


Job description

The hired student(s) will assist the projects with different coding tasks.Tasks include:

  • Database scraping
  • Database compilation and management (gathering information from multiple sources into one coherent database)
  • Processing of xml documents with semi-automated extraction of content
  • Writing scripts for automated collection of data on members of parliament (committee engagements, interest group ties, etc.)

Your profile

The successful candidate(s) should be students at ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich (computer science, engineering, economics and social sciences, mathematics, or natural sciences). They need to have good coding skills in Phyton, NLP skills as well as LaTex skills. Good command of German/French is a plus (since 99% of the data is in German and French), but not a must.
