STI – PhD position in dynamic modeling of gas foil bearings

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Mission:

The Laboratory for Applied Mechanical Design (Prof. Schiffmann) is looking for a PhD researcher whose mission is to analyze and improve the dynamic modeling of gas foil bearings. You will have to implement state-of-the-art modeling techniques to capture the complex fluid-structure interactions that govern the behavior of these particular bearings. Besides implementing high-fidelity models coupled to rotordynamics, you will investigate model order reduction techniques and experimentally validate your models on a unique foil bearing test rig.

Main tasks/duties/responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement numerical procedures and algorithms for capturing the complex dynamic behavior of gas foil bearings.
  • Develop methodologies to predict the rotordynamic performance of gas foil bearing supported rotors (whirl speed map, Campbell diagram, Eigenmode representation).
  • Experimental characterization of different foil bearing designs using a unique test rig.
  • Validate the implemented models with the experimental data.
  • Apply model order reduction and surrogate modeling approaches to reduce the computational cost of predicting the rotordynamic gas foil bearing performance.
  • Devise unified design guidelines for gas foil bearing supported rotors.

Profile:

Applicants should have completed or are in the process of completing their Master of Science in Mechanical engineering or in Computational science. We are expecting a solid scientific background in (1) modeling approaches for dynamic systems, (2) excellent programming skills, (3) model order reduction techniques, (4) surrogate modeling, and (5) experimental methods. Knowledge of gas lubricated bearings and rotordynamics is very welcome. Good communication skills (written and oral) in English are a must; French is a plus.

We offer:

Starting date:

The ideal starting date would be as soon as possible.

How to apply:

Please provide a complete application file including (1) a cover letter, (2) a CV, (3) a list of publications, and (4) the names of 3 references to [email protected]
