The Chair of Computational Mechanics of Building Materials in the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in multiscale modeling for structural strength build-up of concrete.
Project background
The Chair of Computational Mechanics of Building Materials conducts research at the interface between mechanics, materials and scientific computing. Research activities are focused on modeling the link between micro- to meso-scale properties of engineering and biological materials and their macroscale mechanical performance. Various failure mechanisms, such as dynamic fracture and the onset of frictional sliding are at the center of our interests. The overall objectives are the development of numerical models in a high-performance computing framework, and their application in establishing a fundamental understanding of multiscale material mechanics.
Job description
The postdoc position will focus on the mechanical process that concrete undergoes during its hardening phase – when concrete transitions from a fluid-like material to a solid. This process is particularly important for novel digital fabrication technologies in civil engineering applications, where concrete is placed without or very thin formwork and is required to build-up material strength and stiffness fast and reliably. The objective of this project is to develop a numerical model that enables us to upscale the micro-mechanical processes of early structural build-up in cement to the level of structural elements in the manufacturing process, and to provide the necessary fundamental knowledge and practical guidance for a reliable fabrication process. The candidate will be responsible for the development of the numerical model and its application to simulate the manufacturing process. This postdoc position provides opportunities to co-lead a research project, co-supervise graduate students, and to establish and lead collaborations with research partners.
The position is available with starting dates as soon as possible.
Your profile
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in mechanics, material science, physics or a related discipline. The candidate should have a strong background in computational modeling with discrete or continuum methods for solid mechanics, and have substantial programming experience. Expertise in concrete material science is desired. Additionally, excellent communication skills in English (oral and written) are required.
