We are looking for a highly motivated young scientist - an expert in computational fluid dynamics - to join a computational crew in the Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing. You will perform mesoscale multi-physics modeling of laser-material processing with a strong focus on 3D printing of metals and alloys. The research is multidisciplinary and requires close collaboration with experimentalists. We offer a world-class mentorship, an excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings with plenty of possibilities for personal and professional development. Due to a high world interest in additive manufacturing of metals and alloys, a research experience acquired in this program will guarantee exciting future opportunities both in academia and industry, nationally and internationally. The work place will be at Empa in Thun, Switzerland.

You hold a PhD degree obtained no more than 2 years ago in computational physics, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field as documented by a strong publication track record in this field. You have 3+ years of experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using e.g. OpenFOAM as well as excellent programming skills in C++ and MATLAB/Python. Prior experience with modeling phase transitions and phase coexistence as well as fluid flow in molten metals and alloys would be an advantage.

 

A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of materials science are essential. You have a clear interest to work in an application-oriented research environment in close collaboration with our industrial and academic partners. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German or French would be an advantage. The full-time position is limited to two years and is available immediately or upon agreement.
