Postdoc position in modeling induced seismicity

The Swiss Seismological Service (SED, www.seismo.ethz.ch ) at the Department of Earth Sciences is the agency responsible for earthquakes monitoring as well as hazard and risk assessment in Switzerland. The SED conducts a broad range of fundamental and applied research in earthquake science and specifically has been and is a leading partner in several European and international projects in the field of induced seismicity risk and multi-risk. Within the framework of the recently funded DEEP project (Horizon2020 - GEOTHERMICA), we intend to further develop models to study induced seismicity related to geoenergy applications. The SED invites motivated and excellent candidates to apply for a postdoc position in modeling induced seismicity.


Project background

DEEP (Innovation for De-Risking Enahnced Geothermal Energy Projects) brings together a distinguished and interdisciplinary team of scientists and practitioners from around the world committed to provide answers to the challenges related to induced seismicity and convincingly present more reliable procedures to assess and reduce the seismic risk. DEEP executes an ambitious work program that leverages on national efforts, bringing ongoing and planned, but currently fragmented initiatives together into a coherent international effort towards the ultimate goal of de-risking future geothermal projects worldwide. Seismic risk reduction and reservoir efficiency are coupled problems in the case of EGS reservoirs: balancing risk and economic output is a key requirement and DEEP has a strong focus on optimization of monitoring and risk assessment procedures in order to reduce commercial costs to future projects. A strong focus of DEEP will be the application of data driven approaches for risk management at the US Department of Energy geothermal test site FORGE in Utah. 


Job description

The aim of the Postdoc project is to develop innovative modeling approaches related to induced seismicity and the development of an Advanced Traffic Light System. The Postdoc candidate will improve current numerical models by implementing advances in simulators and validating them with data from industrial and research sites. The postdoc research will benefit from the strong international collaborations foreseen in DEEP.

The work will be conducted at SED under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Pio Rinaldi and Prof. Stefan Wiemer. 


Your profile

Interested candidates should have: 

  • A PhD in Geophysics, Geology, Engineering Geology or equivalent
  • A strong knowledge of geomechanics and/or fluid flow in fractured and porous media
  • Experience with numerical modeling and/or experience with machine learning-based data analysis
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Experience in laboratory experiments and/or fieldwork is considered an asset
