80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Institute of Molecular Systems Biology at ETH Zurich is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Dr Nicola Zamboni .

Project background

The group of Dr Zamboni researches the function and regulation of metabolism. In particular, the group is attracted by

  • systems in which metabolism or metabolites drive phenotypic differentiation
  • problems of biomedical relevance, and
  • cases that are especially complex or technically challenging

To tackle such problems, the group is largely devoted to the development of novel approaches for metabolomics, lipidomics, and 13C metabolic flux analysis, data processing and integration.

The Zamboni lab is tightly embedded in national initiatives on personalized health, i.e. PHRT (www.sfa-phrt.ch ). It hosts the PHRT Clinical Metabolomics Analysis Center (CMAC), which aims at providing cutting-edge metabolomics and lipidomics analysis to drive clinical research. While CMAC is productively contributing to numerous projects with tens of thousands of measurements per year, the PHRT is entering its second term (2022-2025) with novel aims. To tackle emerging trends, the lab is seeking several specialists with complementary expertise and interest. In the realm of lipidomics, these activities entail achieving a finer structural characterization while preserving sample throughput, expanding the toolbox of isotopic tracing for quantification of lipid levels and fluxes, disentangling lipid metabolism and trafficking across cellular organelles.

Job description
  • contribute to the development of  innovative gas phase separation and fragmentation lipidomics methods
  • contribute to building a full service portfolio for clinical and biomedical research.
  • conduct lipidomics MS analyses on various systems (TOFs and Orbitraps, LC and GC).
  • participate in instrument maintenance.
  • synergize with team members, collaborators, and vendors.

Your profile
  • a doctoral degree in analytical chemistry or a related field.
  • ample experience in analytical lipidomics from sample preparation to data analysis.
  • sound knowledge of lipid chemistry and biochemistry.
  • excellent general technical skills in LC-HRMS, with hands-on experience in routine maintenance.
  • experience with performing and interpreting isotopic tracing experiments is an additional asset.
