PhD student position: Molecular and functional identification of basolateral phosphate transporter(s)
PhD student position: Molecular and functional identification of basolateral phosphate transporter(s)
100 %
The project is located at the Institute of Physiology (group C.A. Wagner). The PhD is embedded into the PhD program “Biomedicine” under the umbrella of the Life Science Graduate School Zurich.
Your responsibilities
Phosphate is an essential mineral that must be absorbed from diet, is redistributed between different organs, and is either excreted into urine or reabsorbed by kidneys. These processes require a set of dedicated phosphate transporters. While several classes of phosphate transporters are known that mediate the apical uptake of phosphate into epithelial cells, the molecular identity of the transporters needed to release phosphate basolaterally has remained elusive.
The aims of the PhD project are 1) to identify candidate molecules for basolateral phosphate transporters using a combination of bioinformatic tools, omics technologies, and CRISPR/Cas, 2) to validate candidates in cellular models and localize their expression in tissues using intestinal/renal samples, cell culture and functional assays, 3) and to finally validate candidates in vivo by developing transgenic animal models.
Your profile
We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented graduate candidate with a strong interest
in molecular and cell biology associated with an understanding of complex metabolic and endocrine functions, who is eager to work in a modern laboratory environment and to apply cutting-edge genomic, cell biology and bioinformatics technologies.
The successful candidate should hold a diploma or a master degree in the field of Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a related subject together with good bioinformatic knowledge. Proficiency in English, knowledge in bioinformatics and data analysis as well as a good knowledge of cell biology are required.
What we offer
We offer a highly stimulating and diverse research environment with state-of-the art infrastructure. The salary of the position is according to the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
