PhD student position in the Skin Biology Laboratory (Prof. A. Navarini)

The Skin Biology Laboratory (Prof. A. Navarini) is looking for a PhD student to study the mechanisms of chronic inflammatory skin diseases. We have recently developed human epidermal organoids, a 3D epidermis model, to recapitulate the biology and functions of a human epidermis. This innovative model allows us to study in vitro the impact of defective genes or inflammatory conditions on the structure and physiology of the epidermis as it may occur in patients.

The candidate will be in charge of developing and studying this 3-dimensional human model in the context of skin pathologies of interest.

This implies:

• Planning, design and execution of experiments
• Carrying out cell isolation from skin biopsies
• Performing epidermal organoid and 2D epidermal cell cultures
• Modifying epidermal organoids and 2D cultures with genes of interest
• Testing drug candidates on epidermal organoids
• Characterizing gene defects or response to soluble factors in organoids using western-blot, immunochemistry and quantitative RT-PCR.

Applicants should hold a Master degree in Cell/Molecular Biology should have a strong commitment to research. Previous experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques is expected. Knowledge of immunochemistry/immunofluorescence techniques would be a plus. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (spoken and written) are required.
