PhD Student Position in Quantum Optics with Superconducting Circuits

At the Quantum Device Lab ( ), led by Christopher Eichler and Andreas Wallraff at the Department of Physics ( ), we conduct state of the art experimental research in quantum information science and quantum optics with superconducting electronic circuits. In addition, we pursue the development of hybrid quantum systems combining superconductors with semiconductor nanostructures. To strengthen our research and development activities we are looking for a highly motivated PhD student in Quantum Optics with Superconducting Circuits.

Job description

As a successful candidate, you will perform collaborative research to study fundamental quantum optical phenomena and their applications in quantum information processing. This research is carried out in the context of the project “Quantum Photonics with Microwaves in Superconducting Circuits” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Your main research goal will be the development of novel coupling, control and detection schemes in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures and their use for the generation and characterization of quantum many-body states of microwave radiation. Your project will be embedded in the Swiss Quantum Science and Technology Network QSIT ( ) with more than 30 partners across all of Switzerland. You will have the unique opportunity to contribute to a strong research program conducted at a leading European research institution. Your profile

A strong interest in experimental realizations of quantum information processing systems and dedication to pursue a successful career in research, development or education either in academia or industry are a requirement. Ideally, you have experience and a proven record in one or more of the following: quantum information processing and its implementations (e.g. with superconducting circuits, quantum dots, ion traps, NMR), experimental quantum optics and atomic physics (cavity quantum electrodynamics), micro and nano-electronic devices and their fabrication (clean room lithography and deposition techniques), mesoscopic solid state physics, low temperature physics, transport measurements at dilution refrigerator temperatures, microwave electronics, digital electronics, FPGAs, instrumentation, and software development.
