The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

The X-ray tomography group operates state-of-the-art microtomographic instruments and focuses on the development of tools, both instrumentation and algorithms for tomographic X-ray imaging, exploiting latest synchrotron and laboratory technology. This project is carried out in close collaboration with machine learning researchers from the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC Hub at PSI).

For a project within this framework we are looking for a

Development and application of deep learning-based super-resolution X-ray imaging

The underlying project is to develop a fundamentally different approach in X-ray imaging with the aim to improve the imaging resolution, and hence both diagnostics and survival in lung diseases.

Your tasks

  • Implement novel concepts to model and train the physics behind image formation of thoracic CT
  • Apply deep learning techniques and regression methods to enable super resolution imaging and big data processing beyond state-of-the-art
  • Conceive an AI framework for pushing the diagnostic power of CT imaging
  • Collaborate with different domain experts (physicists, computational scientists, software developers, biologists)
